Coolant problem solved
March 1st 2009

The Airbus plant at Broughton has eliminated coolant fouling and disposal problems and improved productivity since installing Alfa Laval's AlfaPure Z3 coolant treatment systems.

The machine, installed in the stringer manufacturing shop, continuously cleans 3000L of Alusol A coolant per hour and returns it to the production line. There is no bacterial growth and no unscheduled breaks for clean-up operations.

Based around a high speed centrifugal separator, the cleaning module is a compact, mobile unit.

Operation is via a PLC-based control system which uses a touch screen to provide control of functions and efficient removal of tramp oil, grease and particles from coolants and other wash liquids. Z3 has operated for two years; the only additional coolant needed has been to top-up fluid lost to atmosphere or on workpieces or scrap.
