Worm & wheel drive update
May 1st 2009

When BOC Gases Ireland decided to update the inefficient existing worm and wheel drives on its cooling tower fans in Cork and Dublin, it selected gearboxes from Hansen Transmissions.

BOC Gases Ireland had been experiencing recurring failures with existing worm and wheel units, which were not felt to be ideally suited to the demanding application.

The Hansen P4 bevel helical unit, with suitably sized bearings, was identified as a better option.

Whilst the order covered the drives in the towers, plus one spare unit, the initial supply was for one only, to prove the ease with which the change could be made. That unit was duly delivered and, with a Hansen One of the first compressor manufacturers to design compact units, Aerzen Machines is launching its 5th generation of screw compressors into the UK and Ireland. The company boasts considerable expertise in manufacturing high quality and When Bukom Oilfield Services needed an upgrade of the compressed air ring main system in its workshop, a representative from Pirtek recommended the plastic John Guest Push-fit System.

The John Guest system comprises black push in fittings and blue pipe.

Pushing a pipe into a fitting produces an instant leakproof connection which is immediately ready for use. The pipe is easily cut to length using pipe cutters.

In addition to being easy to install, the system is also very flexible and can be extended and/or reconfigured if required.

In contrast, a galvanised system would have been slow and expensive to install.

engineer on site to advise and assist, the unit was installed quickly and without any problems.

With the initial drive unit operating satisfactorily, the remaining four will be delivered soon.
