Worm & wheel drive update May 1st 2009 When BOC Gases Ireland decided to
update the inefficient existing worm
and wheel drives on its cooling tower
fans in Cork and Dublin, it selected
gearboxes from Hansen
Transmissions.
BOC Gases Ireland had been
experiencing recurring failures with
existing worm and wheel units,
which were not felt to be ideally
suited to the demanding application.
The Hansen P4 bevel helical unit,
with suitably sized bearings, was
identified as a better option.
Whilst the order covered the drives
in the towers, plus one spare unit, the
initial supply was for one only, to
prove the ease with which the change
could be made. That unit was duly

black push in fittings and blue pipe.
Pushing a pipe into a fitting
produces an instant
leakproof connection
which is immediately
ready for use. The
pipe is easily cut to
length using pipe
cutters.
In addition to
being easy to install, the system is
also very flexible and can be
extended and/or reconfigured if
required.
In contrast, a galvanised system
would have been slow and expensive
to install.
