Screen test May 1st 2009 As a result of trials to prove that it was up to the task, Loctite 248 threadlocking 'stick' anaerobic adhesive has been chosen to secure all 15,000 bolts on a new decorative screen being erected at a car park in Cork, Eire.
The tests, which were carried out by Mechanical and Building Services of Cork, were designed to ensure that the specially designed stainless steel screens would remain in place for many years – even in winds of up to 100mph (160kph) and with vibration caused by a constant flow of traffic.
Initially, the specification called for a cementing agent to be used to lock the stainless steel M12 bolts. However, part of the requirement was that the bolts could be easily loosened with normal hand tools for servicing purposes.
'We couldn't use the liquid product because of the possibility of drips landing on the specially made cladding,' explains MBS Project Engineer, Tony McCarthy. 'That would have defaced the screen or the building itself – something which was unacceptable. To get around this difficulty, we consulted with our local engineering supplier who recommended Loctite 248.' This revolutionary product is a medium strength anaerobic that can be easily applied - even while wearing heavy industrial gloves.
Based on the popular 'glue stick' design, it is simply a case of twisting the base of the container and applying the adhesive.
Loctite 248 can be used on all types of metal fasteners with a thread size up to M36 and will simultaneously lock and seal bolts, nuts and studs in order to prevent loosening caused by vibration. Furthermore, the adhesive reaches functional strength in just two hours.
'We are delighted with this new Loctite stick,' reports Tony McCarthy. 'It is small, yet strong. But we can quickly re-open the stainless fasteners with normal spanners in the event that the screen is to be changed. It suits the job perfectly. More articles from Henkel Ltd: |
